Honduran Spanish, spoken by roughly 10 million people in Honduras and by Honduran communities abroad, belongs to the family of Central American Spanish varieties and shares deep features with the Spanish of neighboring El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. The country sits at a kind of linguistic crossroads — bordered by Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the south, and Nicaragua to the southeast, with a long Caribbean coast to the north and a smaller Pacific outlet on the Gulf of Fonseca — and its Spanish reflects this position, blending features of highland Central American speech with the Caribbean phonetics of the northern coast. Hondurans often refer to themselves as catrachos and catrachas, an affectionate self-identifier whose origins lie in nineteenth-century military history, and their variety of Spanish carries the same sense of national character.

The most defining grammatical feature of Honduran Spanish is voseo. Across most of the country, vos serves as the standard informal second-person pronoun, paired with verb forms like vos tenés, vos podés, and vos sabés that carry the stress on the final syllable. As elsewhere in Central America, the system coexists with usted in formal contexts and occasionally with tú in writing or media, producing a layered system that speakers navigate intuitively. Usted remains common in family and intimate settings in many regions, particularly in the highlands, where parents and children sometimes address each other formally throughout life.

Phonetically, Honduran Spanish varies more than that of some neighboring countries because of the contrast between the highland interior and the Caribbean coast. In the central highlands around Tegucigalpa and the western departments toward the Guatemalan border, pronunciation tends to be more conservative — final s is generally preserved, consonants are pronounced clearly, and the pace is measured. On the northern Caribbean coast around San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, and Tela, the Spanish takes on more Caribbean features. Final s weakens to an aspirated h or disappears, the d between vowels drops in casual speech, and the rhythm runs faster and more melodic. The j and soft g sounds come out as a light aspirated h across the country.

Indigenous influence appears throughout Honduran Spanish, though more lightly than in Guatemala or the Andean countries. Nahuat — the Central American variant of Nahuatl — contributed vocabulary and place names across much of the country, including Tegucigalpa, Comayagua, and Choluteca. Lenca, Maya Chortí, Tolupán, and other indigenous languages survive in particular regions and have left their marks on local vocabulary. The Caribbean coast and the Bay Islands contain communities of Garifuna speakers, descendants of Afro-Indigenous people deported to the region in the late eighteenth century, along with English-speaking Creole populations whose presence dates to British colonial influence in the region. Spanish in these areas exists alongside these other languages and carries traces of contact with them.

Vocabulary that marks Spanish as Honduran includes cipote and cipota for kid or young person, a word shared with El Salvador, macanudo for cool or great, pisto for money, pulpería for the corner stores that anchor neighborhood life, catracho and catracha as the national self-identifiers, and vaya pues as a versatile expression of agreement or farewell common across Central America. Maje serves as an informal address term among friends, similar to its use in Nicaragua and El Salvador. The diminutive -ito appears constantly and often softens requests or signals affection rather than literal smallness, and the warmth and conversational ease that visitors often remark on round out a variety whose speakers carry it proudly across the country and the diaspora.
